    • Do you sometimes look at some handlers, or watch videos and wonder - how is this person and that dog are such a good team? And how is it that their dog just wants to do things for the handler?

    • Are you in awe of such handlers and do you want to get involved in dog sports with your dog, but don't know how to start the training?

    • Have you ever wondered what the difference is between luring and shaping, or how to clicker train your dog?

    • And what are the 4 quadrants of operant conditioning anyway?

All these questions and more to be discussed during this one day seminar on the foundations of dog training. Tailored for beginners to the world of dog sports: we'll be focusing on training for competition specific behaviours while working through a combination of theory, and practical application of foundational skills essential for understanding the 'whys' and 'hows' of dog training and learning theory.

Topics included (but not limited to) -

    1. Choosing appropriate rewards, including techniques for effective toy play.

    2. Luring vs Shaping: Pros and Cons, and where do clickers and reward markers fit in.

    3. Operant vs Classical conditioning, and the theory behind the 4 quadrants.

    4. What is muscle memory and how to make it work for precision obedience.

The understanding of the foundations are needed for any sport and helpful in day-to-day life as well.

Your presenter is Samantha Hendricks, from Haveloc German Shepherds, who has previously presented the highly successful tracking workshops for the club. Samantha has been training dogs for a variety of sports for over 20 years, and has worked with top industry trainers from around the world, combining years of knowledge and experience into an easy to follow and well explained presentation.

    • Does your dog have a nose and can sniff?
Would you like to teach your dog something really cool and potentially useful in your daily life

    • Do you struggle with finding time for obedience training?
Could your dog do with more training, fun, engagement?

    • Could your dog do with less boredom?
Do you struggle with going out of the house/yard and training outside of your place?

    • Is your dog reactive?
Have you ever wished you could participant in some competitive sport with your dog?

Learn how scent work training can help you and your dog.

Scent work is a great way to engage physically with your dog, and it also stimulates them mentally.

Scent work builds their confidence and emotional welfare, while strengthening their bond with humans, and fulfils their natural instincts.

While scent work primarily exercises a dog's mind, it also offers physical exercise benefits. Dogs actively participate in the search process, using their noses to track down hidden scents.

An ideal learning environment away from the distractions of the outside world, providing a great form of enrichment in the home.

Helping resolve behaviour issues like separation anxiety, reactivity, general anxiety, over arousal, fear-aggression etc.

In competitions dogs find 4 specific essential oils odours - Birch, Clove, Anise, Cypress. But you can teach your dog to find any odour if you know how to. Scent work training is incredibly fun for dogs and their owners.
